What is a payline? Picture a line drawn across the reels: matching symbols that sit on it pay, and matches anywhere else do not.

Some games print one, some print 88, and some drop drawn lines entirely in favour of “ways”. The difference changes how a win looks on screen. It does not change how much a game pays back, which is a separate figure that JILI, for one, does not publish.

What Is a Payline? Six Formats, Counted Up From One

Read the table from top to bottom and the max wins do not climb with the lines. One line carries Money Coming to 10000x; eighty-eight lines take Boxing King only to 2000X.

Paylines Against Ways to Win: What Changes for the Player

Fixed lines. Each drawn route is a lane; a match pays only inside one of those lanes. The rules screen shows the paths, and anything outside them pays nothing.

Fixed ways. Matching symbols on neighbouring reels count wherever they sit on each reel. Mega Ace’s 6 reels of 6 rows give 6 to the power of 6, or 46656 ways, and that number never changes.

Changing ways. Golden Empire shows the megaways idea: each spin redraws how many symbols every reel holds, and the ways total rises or falls to match. The 32400 figure is a ceiling, not a constant.

No lines at all. Fishing games carry zero paylines. The target you hit, not a path across reels, decides what a shot pays.

Paylines and the stake

On a fixed-line game the rules may show a stake per line as well as a total. Always compare the total stake per spin. Two games can show the same line bet and charge very different amounts per spin.

Red flags to watch for

1. “More lines, better odds.” Line counts describe how wins form. Without a published RTP, nothing about the line count says how much a game returns.
2. A JILI RTP quoted as fact. The studio has not put a return figure on any of its game pages. A site that gives one is quoting a third party.
3. A line bet dressed up as the stake. If a promotion or a review quotes a per-line amount, multiply it out before you compare.
4. A tile name without a studio label. The lobby lists several studios’ games under similar names, and their line counts differ.
